These summer-blooming perennials form clumps with large, grass-like leaves. Its showy flowers, resembling lilies, are borne in clusters on stems held well above the foliage. They prefer full sun to light shade, well draining soil that is slightly acidic and rich. They do better with deep watering once a week. Daylilies make excellent cut flowers. Apply a layer of compost every fall.

Mexican Feather Grass

This ornamental grass grows to 2' tall. It goes partially dormant during the summer but green in spring and fall. It prefers a sunny, well drained site. This plant can be invasive in some areas, so use caution. To keep reseeding to a minimum, drip irrigation will be best. Cut back in early spring to remove dormant foliage and dried seed heads. It can also tolerate dry shade. It grows to 10" wide and is the finest textured of the ornamental grasses.

This drought tolerant, evergreen shrub is 4' tall and 4' wide and produces beautiful white flowers that bloom from spring to fall.

Pelargonium X domesticum is a shrubby perennial but treated as an annual. It is erect as well as spreading to 3' tall and wide. Leaves are heart shaped to kidney-shaped, dark green, and 2"-4" wide. Flowers are large and showy, found in white, pink, red, lavender, and purple with brilliant blotches and markings of darker colors. This plant blooms in throughout warm weather. It does well in regions of warm dry days and cool evenings with mild (no frost) winters. It needs well draining soil.

Lobularia maritima is an annual. It is a low branching, trailing plant to 1' tall, with narrow or lance-shaped leaves .5"-2" long. There are tiny, four-petaled, white flowers crowded in clusters.

Hollywood Twisted Juniper

Botanical name:Juniperus chinensis 'Kaizuka'

The dark green foliage on the branches of this Juniper start in a narrow cone shape when young but open up gracefully when older. Its twisted looking branches resemble flames. It may grow 15' tall in 15 years. Over time, the branches may lean to one side. Junipers are highly combustible plants.

Cordyline australis is an evergreen shrub that grows 12' to 30' tall and 10' to 15' wide with sword-like leaves. It likes full sun, and is very tolerant of heat and drought. It will live in any type of soil that is well drained. Cut back to develop multiple trunks.
